Principal's Message

Christina Alfred

The holiday season is upon us, which means that many of you (like me) will be busy preparing for festivities in the home, at work, and possibly in the community. Although we are in the midst of the hustle that accompanies this season, I would like to take this moment to share some of the learning opportunities available at Hawaii School for the Deaf and the Blind as a reminder of the on-going ways we continue to assist our families and students.

HSDB is currently receiving additional resources from the federal government’s Title One program. This means we are given the funding through the Student Educational Services program (or SES) for tutoring. An informational letter and application about SES was sent home with your child several weeks ago. If you are still interested in learning more about this opportunity, please contact Vice Principal Katherine Balatico at 733-4999 for more information.

As many of you know, Hawaii’s Department of Education (DOE) encourages all schools to prepare students to be college AND career ready. This year, we plan to organize events (e.g., excursions, guest speakers, etc.) introducing students to the many opportunities available to them after they graduate from high school. As an example of our effort to expose our students to these opportunities, we will have a school wide assembly on December 7th introducing students to Certified Deaf Interpreters (CDI) and how these CDIs provide an important function in communication for Deaf individuals and how they, too, can become CDIs.

HSDB offers family ASL classes to all of our families. It is a wonderful way to learn sign language so that you can better communicate with your child. It is also a great way to come together as a family during this time of learning, and we hope you take advantage of this opportunity to join us. For more information, please contact Rosalind Kia at 733-4999.

I hope your child’s academic year is progressing well. If you have questions or would simply like to stop by for a visit, please don’t hesitate to contact us. I thank you for your support of education and hope you have a joyous new year.

Aloha, Christina Alfred, TA Principal
