HCDB Media Lab Description & Recommendations

Room Description:

•    Dimension / Walls: the room is on the makai (ocean) side of the library and is about 12’ by 12’ and has a single door (mauka [mountain] side) with a small tinted window in it. The room has misc. movable furniture in it. It also has a built in counter/desk on the mauka wall that is about 9’ long. The Ewa, mauka and Diamond Head wall have a cinder-brick construction with a light green-brown color. The makai wall is solid concrete and has an off-white color. The ceiling has an off-white concrete frame with sound-tiles in the center. There is some paint/concrete damage in the makai-Ewa corner from a rain leak (that has been recently fixed). The Diamond Head wall has a recessed, built-in curtain rod with a light-tan curtain on it. The makai wall has a wood bar that is bracketed-out from the wall. The entire floor is covered by an avocado-colored carpet.

•    Windows: there are 3 windows. A long, but low viewing window (on the mauka side) – allowing people to look in & out from the small soundproof room next door. There are two windows on the Diamond Head side – a small one on the left is covered with plywood and corkboard, a larger one on the right is uncovered.

•    Lighting: room has four double-tube fluorescent light fixtures that are arranged in parallel format running from Ewa to Diamond Head and are closer to the Diamond Head wall than the Ewa wall.

•    Ventilation: the Library has a central AC unit that runs on a timer (but also has an over-ride for off hours and weekends). The room has separate intake / outtake vents, but is not very cold (compared to the rest of the library).

•    Electricity / Internet Access: the room has electricity outlets on 3 walls – mauka, Diamond Head and makai; but not the Ewa wall. The library has two Wi-Fi systems (1 old, 1 new). The room has a single hardwire CAT-5 line feeding into the room from the mauka wall. There is also a visual fire alarm on the Ewa wall, but no clock / messaging board in the room. There is also a movement alarm sensor on the makai-Ewa corner wall.

Room Recommendations / Discussions:

•    Walls / Floor: there was discussion to repaint the light green-brown color to something that is more “friendly.” It would be nice to patch up and repaint the water damage in the makai-Ewa corner too. There was discussion to add sound-deadening material on the walls (Sydney and Jim were to follow-up on this). Jim suggested the Diamond Head side (which already has a curtain-rod) be used as a “stage.” He also mentioned something for covering the floor (or at least part of it). Jim also suggested covering the Diamond Head wall with corkboard to make it easy to change backgrounds for shooting – that we should have a few different backgrounds (including a “green screen”) for filming. Jim suggested that we should also make a large HCDB logo for the board to help people identify our films quickly. All furniture should be moved out of the room (a file cabinet and possibly small book shelf, might be useful to keep in the room). The built in counter/desk on the mauka wall should be kept and used for the editing station (two 17” iMacs w/ additional RAM memory will be placed there). Jim suggested adding an LCD monitor to one of the walls as a “live feed” for the people being filmed to see themselves (there is a 32” monitor from Sydney’s office that can be used – just need a mounting bracket).

•    Windows: we discussed boarding up the up the Diamond Head window (similarly to the other one). We can probably get Dwayne (HCDB Maintenance) to do this. Because of the amount of light that comes in from the soundproof room next door, the mauka window should be covered (with paper until a decision is made about what to do with that room).

•    Lighting: Jim suggested that the fluorescent light tubes be replaced with brighter / non-flickering tubes. He also suggested that a metal rod be extended across the room (from mauka to makai walls) in which halogen lights could be mounted and moved about. Tom has one halogen light set for the computer lab. Additional sets need to be bought.

•    Ventilation: the Library AC unit might now provide enough power to keep the room cool. Some thoughts: keep the door open when not filming (only editing), turn off halogen lights when not shooting (they tend to produce a lot of heat), add floor fans to keep the air circulated. There is also the possibility of buying a small internal room-size AC unit.

•    Electricity / Internet Access: strong power-strips for each of the outlets should be purchased (possibly a UPS to provide short time power for the computers in case of electricity outage). Check with Steve Hanai and see if the LAN wiring can be expanded a little with an outlet of maybe 2 lines. Also need to check about TV cable feed (especially if we ever wanted to broadcast live). Another item to check on is if a clock / messaging board can be added to the room.

•    Additional Notes: Angela reminded us that there are future school renovations planned for HCDB and the Library – they include windows & frames (which are not hurricane resistant), light fixtures and carpeting. Tom would like to consider 3 quality wall maps of Oahu, Hawaiian Islands and of the Pacific Rim (He believes there will be multiple times we will want to do a “zoom in” shot of a lacation that is being referred to in these areas. If it can fit (probably on the makai wall), maybe a US and World map should be added to it.
