Men of W.A.R

Last Thursday, the Men of W.A.R. (Wisdom, Authority, and Righteousness), came and performed at our Deaf Visual Arts celebration.  Even though they are not deaf, these men had a message that is important to us all, deaf and hearing alike.

Inga Park Okuna, Parent Educator and Counselor here at HCDB, summarized very nicely how teachers can use the Men of W.A.R. performance to help our students realize how to plan for success.  Webmaster Jeff Stabile edited a bit to tailor the summary to our web audience.  The result:

1.  Barriers to success exist, but you can knock them down.  People may set up barriers, they may say that you can't do things, they may not have faith in you -- but you need to be strong and believe in yourself.  If you work at it, you can succeed.

2. "You reap what you sow".  If you plant an orange seed, you don't get a banana or a pineapple; you get an orange.  Same thing happens if you plant "seeds" by fooling around, making trouble, not doing your homework, not listening to the teacher, etc.; you don't get the "fruit" of admission to college or a good job that you like.

If you want a banana, you plant a banana.  If you want to go to college, you work hard, learn learn learn, study, pay attention, do your homework... then you can succeed.  If you want to get a good job, then you have to have discipline now.

3. Don't try any of the stunts at home!  You will get hurt.

Hopefully we can all can use this performance as a launching pad for future discussions, relating it back to the Men of W.A.R.'s performance.  What the Men of W.A.R. say applies to so many aspects of life!

More examples:

If you want to keep your teeth and you don't want the dentist to drill into them and do a root canal:  brush, floss, etc., daily -- same as if you want an apple on the tree; plant an apple seed, not a pineapple crown.

If you want people to trust you, be honest.

A good way to train your brain to think this way is to have a 2 min discussion once a day w/a sentence starter such as:

If you want to be healthy, then....
If you want to have nice skin, then...
If you want to smell good so people like to be near you, then...
If you want to have friends, then...

Imagine how life might improve if we all do this!
